Acid reflux, GERD, and the gut you can't see.

If you've been managing acid reflux with antacids and the relief keeps wearing off, it's worth knowing what most reflux advice skips: reflux is frequently a motility and pressure problem, not only an acid problem. And motility runs on the gut microbiome.

Why acid reflux isn't only about acid

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) happens when stomach contents move the wrong way, up past the lower esophageal sphincter. Acid is what you feel — the burn — but the upstream drivers are often slow gastric emptying, intra-abdominal pressure from bloating and gas, and a disrupted microbiome that ferments food into excess gas before it moves through.

That's why two people with identical acid levels can have very different reflux. The difference is often what's happening below the stomach: how fast things move, and how much gas the gut is producing along the way.

Where probiotics fit

Targeted probiotic strains affect reflux indirectly but meaningfully — by supporting motility and reducing the fermentation that drives bloating and pressure. Strains in the Bifidobacterium family produce short-chain fatty acids that help maintain the gut's natural peristaltic rhythm. When the lower gut moves on schedule, less pressure builds upstream.

This is structure/function support, not a treatment. If you have diagnosed GERD, Barrett's esophagus, or persistent symptoms, that belongs with your doctor. But for the everyday reflux that tracks with bloating, gas, and irregularity, the gut-motility angle is real and under-discussed.

What the data shows

In Flore Clinical's longitudinal cohort, paired within-subject resolution for acid reflux / GERD reached cumulative rates climbing toward 90% over the program course — not from acid suppression, but from system-matched microbiome support. The honest caveat: this is real-world, observational data, not a controlled trial. Read the full white paper.

The formula matched to this

The Regular One targets the gut-motility system — the same machinery that, when it stalls, lets pressure build into reflux. It pairs two issue-specific Bifidobacterium strains for daily regularity, on the shared Universal Core.
